Uninstalled BackTrack2, removed dual boot, back to Vista.

Linux, Windows

So my wireless card was supposed to work right off the bat with BackTrack so I could start breaking WEP128 encryption on wireless networks. But as it turns out BackTrack doesn’t recognize the wireless switch on the outside of my laptop.

So for the uninstall.

1. I didn’t want to just delete the partitions because I wanted to remove the bootloader LILO first.

2. I ran the command

lilo -u /dev/sda

at a terminal window in Linux.

3. It told me my disk was busy and it couldn’t be removed :(

4. A tutorial told me to boot up with the live cd and unmount all the drives and it should remove it

5. I mounted and unmounted the drives several times and ran the same command above on all the different partitions sda1-sda7 but it now tells me it can’t find LILO signature on any drive…so maybe the first command worked after all?

6. I rebooted and LILO was gone and Windows Vista started almost normally – it froze after the loading screen but I rebooted and I got to the login screen. YAY I didn’t fry my laptop.

7. Now to try either for Mac OS X install or maybe switch to

Installed Back Track 2 to Acer Aspire 5570z

Linux

I spent about 5 hours but finally got Back Track 2 distro of Linux installed to the harddrive of my new Acer laptop. I fried a Compaq in highschool trying to install RedHat so I was a bit wary of this. I followed the video tutorial and it all worked pretty well. I now have a dual boot machine with all the hacking tools I could ever need…I mean offensive security tools I could ever need.

Its nice to be back into Linux – I was taught Linux in my high school computer science class by a great teacher Roger Frank – a founding member of Sun Microsystems – but haven’t used it since.

Problems with the install:

  • Partitioning took about 4 restarts to get it to work, and create the filesystems, mount them, and install BackTrack
  • No wireless lan support because my laptop has an external switch for the wireless – which defaults to off
  • More to come i’m sure

I’m going to get Ubuntu up in the next few weeks and check that out too.

DaftPunk Alive 2007 @ Red Rocks

Music

So I wrote a whole big post about going to Daft Punk and its their first tour since 97 and it was a bunch of hipsters in tight jeans and iPhones but it was cool and they were rocking out because all us weird kids grew up listing to Daft Punk on our hour long bus rides to 8th grade and how Daft Punk has no hype and still has huge turnouts for their shows and they probably spent like $2,000,000 on their setup and transportation for the show. And it was really cool. But that post got deleted so now you get this…and some video with crappy sound that I didn’t take but its on youtube.
